Delcam to Launch PowerINSPECT 2014 at Control

http://www.delcam.com
BIRMINGHAM, UK, Mar 18, 2014 - Delcam will launch the 2014 release of its PowerINSPECT inspection software at the Control exhibition to be held in Stuttgart from 6th to 9th May. PowerINSPECT 2014 will feature a new interface with new icons that will make the software more intuitive and even easier to use. Other enhancements in the new version include the ability to create compound items and so speed up and simplify repetitive measurements.

PowerINSPECT 2014 screenshot

The new interface has been developed to further improve the ease of use that has been central to PowerINSPECT becoming the world's leading hardware-independent inspection software. Over the last few releases, the software has seen a significant increase in the range of measurements that it can make. The software can now be used to take all types of simple measurements and to inspect a growing variety of geometric features, as well as offering more tools for analyzing complex 3D surfaces. In addition to making it easier to negotiate the greater range of options, the interface features freshly-designed icons, which give a cleaner look and feel to the software.

PowerINSPECT 2014 also has the ability for users to create custom toolbars, which allow frequently-used commands to be grouped together in one convenient place. This will also improve speed and ease of use. It is possible to export and import toolbars, so users can easily transfer their set-up to a different PC or share their toolbars with other operators.

During inspection, 2D features (circles, slots, rectangles and the like) are always projected to a reference plane. For example, when inspecting a circle representing the top of a cylinder, the user will want to measure the properties of the circle and its height. PowerINSPECT can now create a compound item that combines the plane and the feature together into a single compound feature, and assumes that the 2D feature is to be reported, while the plane is not. This leads to a shorter sequence tree that is easier to navigate, and a report that shows only the properties of the 2D features by default.

This option is especially valuable for any iterative building operation, where an assembly needs to be measured, adjusted and re-measured until the results are acceptable. Using compound features makes it much quicker and easier to go back and forth between measurements. In particular, if the plane needs to be re-measured to determine the height of the circle, rather than the xy position, it can be re-measured immediately. This option was primarily designed for the building and calibration of fixtures but it is useful in any scenario where the user has to re-measure and adjust features within an assembly.

Enhancements to the measurement dialogues allow a wider range of information to be shown in addition to the measured values. The user can now also choose to display nominal, deviation and error values, helping to highlight immediately whether each measured feature is in tolerance. This provides the operator with more complete information, allowing even faster decisions about the status of the part and whether to continue with, or end, the measurement routine.

The range of geometric features that can be measured with PowerINSPECT continues to be increased with a new option to create a probed ellipse. A new constructed geometric feature allows the user to create the circle at the intersection of two tori. This can then be used to locate the transition point in ‘S’ bends in tubing and duct-work applications. In addition, enhancements have been made to the measurement of a constructed ellipse.

Improved calibration records can now be recorded in the probe database. This allows better traceability of the data and provides more assistance for the user to manage their calibrations.

Finally, PowerINSPECT 2014 includes improved support for the Renishaw PH20 probe. This probe is becoming more popular as the five-access motion of the PH20 allows measurement points to be taken by moving only the head rather than the complete CMM structure, giving easy access to features at any angle and minimizing stylus changes.

Delcam for SolidWorks 2014 R2 Supports Tombstone Machining

http://www.delcam.com
BIRMINGHAM, UK, Mar 13, 2014 - Delcam has released the 2014 R2 version of its Delcam for SolidWorks integrated CAM package for SolidWorks. A new module has been added to Delcam for SolidWorks, Delcam's fully-integrated CAM system for SolidWorks, so that the software can now support tombstone machining. Other enhancements in the 2014 R2 version include new options for stock models, better support for holes from the SolidWorks Hole Wizard and more flexible Z-level roughing.

Delcam for SolidWorks combines the benefits associated with Delcam's PowerMILL and FeatureCAM CAM systems. It is based on Delcam's proven machining algorithms that are already used by more than 40,000 customers around the world. The software offers PowerMILL's exceptional speed of toolpath calculation, plus the advanced strategies for high-speed and five-axis machining, to ensure increased productivity, maximum tool life and immaculate surface finish, even when cutting the hardest, most challenging materials. At the same time, Delcam for SolidWorks has the same strong focus on ease of use as FeatureCAM, including all of the knowledge-based automation that makes that system so consistent and reliable.

Delcam for SolidWorks is fully integrated into the SolidWorks environment so that the program looks and behaves like SolidWorks. It offers full associativity so that any changes in the CAD model are reflected automatically in the toolpaths. However, this associativity is more intelligent than that offered in many other integrated CAM systems. Delcam for SolidWorks doesn’t simply modify the existing toolpaths but also reviews the choice of cutting tools and machining strategies, and changes them if necessary.

Tombstone machining allows multiple parts to be loaded onto different sides of a fixture and then machined in one sequence. The fixture and the complete set of parts can then be replaced, in some cases automatically, with the next set of components and the associated tombstone. With the new tombstone-machining module, parts that have been programmed individually can be positioned around the tombstone and a single program generated for the complete set. Models of the tombstone and any other fixtures can be loaded into the assembly within the software and are then treated in the same way as other fixtures. The NC code can be generated either relative to the set-ups of individual models or relative to reference set-ups within the tombstone assembly.

In a related development, Delcam for SolidWorks now also supports multiple, simultaneous part comparisons. If a set of different parts is being machined on a tombstone, or any other fixture, the various components can be verified with their respective CAD models in one operation.

Rough machining in Delcam for SolidWorks 2014 R2 has been improved with a new option to set the direction in which Z-level roughing toolpaths are offset. A simple button allows the user to select whether the part should be machined from the outside inwards or from the inside towards the outside. An automatic option can also be chosen where the software will decide the offset direction, depending on whether a core or a cavity shape is being machined.

A number of improvements have been made to the stock model functionality in Delcam for SolidWorks. The first of these enhancements eliminates excessive tool engagement and limits the maximum depth of any cut into un-machined material. Both these controls reduce tool wear and improve surface finish by avoiding any overloading of the tool. The same functionality also removes toolpath segments that machine very little or no material.

Rest machining has been made more efficient in two ways. Firstly, a new "detect metal thicker" command ensures that rest material thinner than the specified limit is ignored. This prevents toolpaths being generated in any areas where the benefit of the extra cut is negligible, such as cusps left by the previous toolpath.

Secondly, toolpath fragmentation and the resultant air moves between fragments can be reduced by specifying a minimum gap length between cutting moves. Any gaps shorter than the specified distance will be linked with a tangential move between the segments, rather than having the tool retract fully from the surface for a very short air move.

In addition, new functionality has been added that allows stock models to be modified by removing operations. This eliminates the need in previous releases to recreate the stock model completely if such a change was needed.

Finally, Delcam for SolidWorks offers better support for hole manufacture by recognizing dowel holes as reamed holes. During programming, the software will select automatically the appropriate drill and reamer to be used in the program for the size of the hole.

The cutter compensation used by Delcam for SolidWorks can now be specified on an operation level so removing the need to create duplicate features in order to set different values. The most common case where this will be needed is when different cutter compensation is required for the finish pass and for any subsequent chamfering operation.

For more information, including video demonstrations of the new functionality, and to download the free Delcam for SolidWorks XPRESS version for 2D milling and drilling, visit http://lz.delcamforsolidworks.com.

Trimble Releases SketchUp 2014

http://www.trimble.com
SUNNYVALE, CA, Mar 4, 2014 - Trimble (NASDAQ: TRMB) released SketchUp 2014, the latest version of its popular 3D modeling platform for architects, engineers, design and construction professionals, as well as members of the global maker community. SketchUp 2014 features major enhancements to SketchUp's 3D Warehouse - the world's largest repository of free, high-quality, 3D content - as well as new tools that improve the classification of design objects, tighten interoperability with other products used in Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflows, and make professional documentation more efficient.

With more than 30 million unique activations in the past year, SketchUp is the most widely used 3D modeling software in the world today. Spanning SketchUp Pro for professional users and SketchUp Make for hobbyists and enthusiasts, the new release marks Trimble's second major update to SketchUp software in the past 10 months and reinforces the company's commitment to continuously improve SketchUp with easier ways to create, access, share and collaborate on 2D drawings and 3D models.

"SketchUp's power lies in its simplicity and flexibility, which has led to its use in projects as diverse as designing a doghouse in the backyard or modeling the bracing for the World Trade Center Transportation Hub in New York," said Chris Keating, director of the Architecture Division within the Trimble Buildings Group. "As SketchUp's professional footprint expands, access to content and broad interoperability are vital issues to our customers. With SketchUp 2014, we're giving users better tools to easily access the models they need and to ensure those models add value throughout the information modeling process."

New 3D Warehouse: Where Content is King

SketchUp's 3D Warehouse is an online repository for finding, storing and sharing useful 3D models. In SketchUp 2014, the 3D Warehouse has been rebuilt, making it easier for users to quickly find the models they need, create and organize their own collections, and share them with the world.

The new 3D Warehouse now features an integrated WebGL viewer, enabling users to preview and orbit models in full 3D before downloading them into their own projects.

Users can now upload 3D models directly from their Web browsers, without first opening them in SketchUp, while the maximum size of uploadable models has been increased from 10 to 50 megabytes.

The new Product Catalogs feature speeds the task of finding specific manufacturers' products - from windows to washing machines - letting users start their models with the exact items they intend to use.
Building Upon SketchUp Pro's Information Modeling Foundation

Since BIM is an increasingly important process for professionals in architecture, engineering and construction, Trimble has expanded SketchUp Pro's interoperability with other commonly used tools and data. The new release provides an easier way for users to participate in the information modeling process by ensuring that their objects and models - and the data connected to them - remain consistently identifiable throughout the BIM workflow.

SketchUp Pro 2014 contains three new features that are specific to information modeling:
  • IFC Export - since the information embedded in information models is often used by other software programs, SketchUp Pro 2014 now includes another important industry standard to its roster of supported exports - the IFC 2x3 file type.
  • Classifier - this feature allows users to classify objects with the pre-loaded IFC classification, use alternate classification types, or create a customized system for their specific needs.
  • Component Options - provides editable options relevant to an object's classified type, allowing pertinent data about each object to be managed throughout the information modeling process.
"BIM workflows are often complex and rigid processes, and we believe they don't need to be," said John Bacus, director of SketchUp product management at Trimble. "With this new release, we are enabling users to participate more effectively at any point in the information modeling process. We've added simple tools for adding structured information to a model in a way that is helpful to SketchUp customers, allowing them to easily pass information to others on their project teams, regardless of the tools being used."

Documentation Done Right

Professional users will also benefit from continued enhancements to the 2D documentation capabilities in SketchUp Pro 2014, such as: auto tags to improve accuracy and reduce repetitive work, smart labels with pre-populated relevant text, and significant improvements in speed for vector-rendered model views.
