The hoses from Matzen & Timm are used by industries where precision and capacity are important - like aircraft and automotive design. Diameter, construction, pressure loads, temperature resistance and compliance requirements are essential in their design and development. In order to meet increasingly complex performance requirements, engineers at Matzen & Timm will use Marc to perform virtual testing.

Simulation will give engineers insight into the different operating conditions, internal pressures, relative motions, and behaviors occurring during the installation of the hoses. The objective of the analysis is to assess strength, flexibility and nonlinear buckling forces. The realistic and structural-mechanical behaviors cannot be accurately predicted without the consideration of the nonlinear effects. Matzen & Timm use a combination of different materials with partly nonlinear properties. For example, soft and highly nonlinear elastomers were combined with stiff fiber reinforcements or metal components.

"The main characteristics of our hoses are lightweight construction in combination with temperature resistance," explained Matzen & Timm managing director Dirk Baumann. China's Zhao Shi Cheng Wins Delcam Int'l Student CAM Competition

http://www.delcam.com
BIRMINGHAM, UK, Jan 28, 2014 - Zhao Shi Cheng, from Beijing Automatic Engineering School in China, was the winner of Delcam's latest international student CAM competition, which was held at the company's Birmingham headquarters earlier this month. Second and third places were taken by students from Korea - Won Jun, Lee from Korea Polytechnics and Hyun Keun, Byun from Jeonbuk Human Resources Development Institute.

The competition was again sponsored by cutting-tool supplier, Seco, which provided the tooling for the student’s machining projects.

In addition to China and Korea, the finalists came from Greece, Taiwan, Russia and the Ukraine. Each of the contestants had previously won the CAM competition in their region to qualify for the final in Birmingham.

For the final competition, each student was given an IGES file of a component from which they had to produce a machining program using Delcam's PowerMILL software for high-speed and five-axis machining. The various NC programs were then run on one of the high-speed machining centers within Delcam's Advanced Manufacturing Facility using a specified range of tooling supplied by Seco. All of the students were able to produce toolpaths that could be machined successfully, with the results being assessed against criteria including quality of toolpaths, machining time and surface finish.

After announcing the winner and presenting certificates to all the contestants, Delcam's Commercial Director, Bart Simpson, said "Delcam works with universities around the world, helping to train the next generation of engineers for our growing customer base. We were very pleased by the standard reached by all the students, although that was perhaps to be expected after the finalists had already won competitions in their respective countries."

"We were very appreciative of Seco for the support given by the company for the competition," added Mr. Simpson. "We hope to continue to work with Seco on a bigger event next year, where we plan to attract finalists from an increased number of countries."

CimatronE v12 to Support AMF Format for 3D Printing

http://www.cimatron.com
GIVAT SHMUEL, Israel, Jan 22, 2014 - Cimatron Limited (NASDAQ: CIMT) announced that its next software release planned for mid-2014, CimatronE version 12, will support the Additive Manufacturing File (AMF) format - the new standard for converting 3D models into digital files for 3D printing and additive manufacturing.

Explained Mr. Terry Wohlers, principal consultant and president of Wohlers Associates and member of Cimatron's 3D Printing Advisory Board: "Since the late 1980s, the STL file format has been the de facto industry standard for transferring CAD data to additive manufacturing equipment (3D printers). However, the STL format has no provisions for representing color, textures, materials, lattice/mesh structures, units, and other properties of the finished printed part."

"The new XML-based AMF standard was developed to bridge the gap between CAD and modern additive manufacturing technology. This file format contains all relevant information required for making a 3D printed part, including the final part’s material, color and internal structure."

"The AMF format was jointly adopted as an industry standard by both ASTM International and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) last year, and I am glad to see that Cimatron has completed development for supporting this capability in its next software release."

Mr. Danny Haran, Cimatron's President and CEO, noted: "As we've previously stated, we keep looking at solutions that Cimatron can offer to the growing market for additive and hybrid manufacturing. We are pleased to be among the first CAD vendors to offer direct support of AMF. We believe more market participants will adopt AMF as their preferred method of 3D printing file interface in the coming years."

FeatureCAM 2014 R2 Supports Right-Angle Heads, Multiple Roughing

http://www.delcam.com
BIRMINGHAM, UK, Jan 21, 2014 - Delcam has released the 2014 R2 version of its FeatureCAM feature-based CAM which provides support for milling and drilling with right-angle heads, and one-stop programming of multiple roughing operations. Other enhancements in this release include better control of Z-level roughing, and improvements to Wire EDM and chamfering.

FCAM2014R2 right-angle head

FeatureCAM was the world's first feature-based programming software when it was launched in 1995. Constant development since then has ensured that the system has retained its leadership in programming speed and ease of use, while an increased range of strategies has been added to provide more efficient toolpaths giving greater productivity on a wider range of machines.

Right-angle heads allow internal pockets to be milled and internal holes to be drilled that would be inaccessible, and so impossible to produce, using a conventional head. They are now available as an option on an increasing range of machines, including an wide variety of mill-turn equipment.

FeatureCAM 2014 R2 is the first release that has the ability to program and simulate both milling and drilling with right-angle heads. These new strategies will allow users to take full advantage of the flexibility of machines with this option.

A growing range of high-speed and high-efficiency area clearance strategies have been included in FeatureCAM in recent years, including Delcam's unique Vortex strategy that was added in the initial 2014 release. Vortex gives significant time savings by taking deeper cuts with solid-carbide tooling. It allows the full flute length to be used as the cutting surface so increasing material removal rates and also maintains a controlled engagement angle for the complete operation to extend the cutter’s life and to protect the machine tool.

In FeatureCAM 2014 R2, multiple tools, for example, 20 mm, 10 mm and 5 mm end mills, can be selected for roughing and rest-roughing using these strategies, and the complete machining sequence calculated in one operation. A stock model is created automatically after each tool is applied, which is then used as the basis for the program created with the next smaller cutter. This regular updating of the stock model ensures that programs for the later tools are only created in areas where material still remains, so minimizing air moves and optimising overall machining efficiency.

Rough machining has also been improved with a new option to set the direction in which Z-level roughing toolpaths are offset. A simple button allows the user to select whether the part should be machined from the outside inwards or from the inside towards the outside. An automatic option can also be chosen where FeatureCAM will decide the offset direction, depending on whether a core or a cavity shape is being machined.

For parts needing wire EDM, the model is often supplied only with a curve showing the shape to be cut rather than a fully-defined feature. FeatureCAM can now project the curve through the stock and also measure the thickness of the feature. The allows the cutting conditions, including feeds, speeds and power levels, to be set at the most suitable values for the EDM equipment.

The cutter compensation used by FeatureCAM can now be specified on an operation level so removing the need to create duplicate features in order to set different values. The most common case where this will be needed is when different cutter compensation is required for the finish pass and for any subsequent chamfering operation.

For full details, including video demonstrations of the new functionality, and to download an evaluation version of FeatureCAM, visit www.delcam.tv/fc2014.

e-Xstream Releases Digimat 5.0.1 for Material Modeling

HAUTCHARAGE, LUXEMBOURG, Jan 19, 2014 - e-Xstream engineering, an MSC Software Company, and software developer of Digimat, the leading nonlinear multi-scale material and structure modeling platform has announced the new release of Digimat 5.0.1. The new capabilities in this release significantly improve the user friendliness of analyzing fiber reinforced plastics and the accuracy of analyzing unidirectional (UD) and woven composites.

New enhancements and highlights include:

New User Interface for Reinforced Plastics Analysis

Digimat-RP ("Reinforced Plastics") now provides engineers with a guided workflow tool that aids in the setup and streamlines the process of accurate analysis of plastic parts in a robust, fast and easy manner. It bridges the gap between injection molding and nonlinear FEA of plastic parts.

The new release supports the setup of 3D analyses with Marc, MSC Nastran, Abaqus, Ansys, and LS-Dyna based on Moldflow, Moldex3D, Sigmasoft or Timon 3D processing results. All Digimat solution technologies are supported. Jobs can either be run and monitored on a local computer or packaged for the remote solution on a cluster. Digimat-RP is an intuitive 3-step process that enables a part engineer (not necessarily a material expert) to do predictive analysis of plastic parts using one single process oriented product (RP) instead of the original four. RP is easy to learn and to use by "non-experts". The experts can continue to use the general-purpose building blocks and prepare the models for easy use in RP.

Progressive Failure of UD Composite Materials

Digimat now offers a Matzenmiller-Lubliner-Taylor (MLT) based model for the progressive failure of UD composite materials. Failure progression includes individual damage control functions as well as stabilization of failure progression for coupled analyses. In initial studies, 97% accuracy on open hole tension test could be reached.

Nonlinear Multi-Scale Modeling with Digimat and Nastran Sol 700

MSC Nastran SOL700 is now available in the Digimat-CAE/Nastran interface supporting MSC Nastran 2013.1.

Improved Robustness for Woven Composites

The Hybrid solution method has been enhanced to support elastic, elastoplastic and elasto-viscoplastic material models for woven composites including per-phase failure.

Thermal & Thermo-Mechanical Analysis

Anisotropic thermal conductivity can be used in coupled analyses with Digimat-CAE/Abaqus. Thermo-mechanical analyses are available via Digimat-CAE/Marc. Robustness has been improved by offering RE of TEP material models in MX and the support of TE and TEP within the Hybrid solution method.

"Global firms such as AECOM - whose program and project portfolios span multiple years, teams and geographies - represent the complexities of today's construction industry," added Bryn Fosburgh, vice president at Trimble. "Trimble Buildings was organized to address these complexities by providing advanced solutions to streamline communication and collaboration across the construction supply chain. We're excited to collaborate with a customer whose vision of service to the construction industry so closely matches our own."

Real-World Benefits

AECOM intends to leverage Trimble solutions to systemize many of the core processes in the DBO continuum, with the core goal of improving accuracy, increasing efficiency and delivering higher-quality projects to its clients. Samples include:
  • Real-time program and project performance - Executive dashboards can track the overall health of a construction project with at-a-glance project status and early-issue alerts, and also illustrate key elements by project stage, including cost and schedule performance.
  • BIM and design management - 3D modeling, 4D (scheduling) and 5D (costing) tools with clash detection capability enable management and analysis early in the design process, rather than in the field during construction. Automated quantity takeoff based on 3D models makes estimating more efficient and accurate - even as projects evolve.
  • Precision data for office and field - 3D modeling tools can be used by fabricators to ensure precise production and assembly of critical components, such as beams or trusses. Measurements can be downloaded into the core model prior to manufacturing, improving accuracy and saving time compared to manual data entry.
AECOM will begin deploying Trimble's DBO software and solutions beginning in 2014.
